In Dare, certain stuff are juz left…unexplained. (i didn’t recall feeling annoyed or frustrated) At least in Remember, we do get a fairly satisfying debriefing. Given that this is a psycho-thriller, I’d expect a better explanation on how our profiler manages to solve the case and nail the perp. Probably cos Dare spends quite a lot of time on developing Jianyao-Simon’s love line, I kinda feel the earlier cases are shabbily dealt with. I shan’t say more for fear of spoilers… As for the Ultimate Nemesis character, I’d say both Remember and Dare have a scary enough Psycho to keep you on the edge of your seat. In terms of narrative, both Remember and Dare criss-crosses past and present - the heroes’ pasts in both dramas have an impact on the current case they are working on. Thankfully, he has a good buddy Kris (Fu Ziyu), whose EQ is much higher than him to provide pointers. Thus, he cannot understand why his “romantic gestures” (like ordering Jianyao to move in with him and insisting that she should cos “it is the right and logical choice”) would fail. As a renowned profiler, he professes to know humans’ behaviours and their associative mental states like the back of his hand…but he can’t fathom women. Which is the super hilarious portion of Dare, imo. And he adapts his behaviour in order to woo her.

However, unlike Lee-hyun, Simon Bo realises he is in love with Jianyao rather early on in the show. Both are annoying arrogant yet rightly so, cos their abilities to read people’s minds are peerless. As for Simon, he is very similar to Lee-hyun in Remember. And throughout Dare, she proves that she can profile criminals as well as the expert - Simon Bo (Bo Jinyan). She may not throw punches as well as Ji-an, but she has a very sharp analytical brain. That doesn’t mean Jianyao is your typical pretty vase in the background. (to the point i am so annoyed with her speech’s volume in the show) (btw, it’s 24eps, each only half an hour) Our female lead, Jianyao, is very much like the plucky Cha Ji-an in Remember. However, while Ji-an is a tomboy, Jianyao is very feminine.

Adapted from a novel of the same name, the genre is slanted towards romance (and rom-com?) for the better half of the show. Unlike Remember though, the main selling point of Dare is its romance angle. However, in Dare‘s case, the female lead isn’t a police officer (though her bff - and long time admirer) is one. In both Remember and Dare, we have an arrogant, tactless criminal profiler as the main lead, and a plucky female heroine. In some ways, the set up is similar to kdrama I Remember You (both shows aired almost back to back, with the Korean one first). Thanks to Reply 1988‘s new year’s hiatus, I finally get to catch a Chinese drama which has caught my eye some time back since its debut.
